Testing for XMRV

Testing - First comes testing for the virus. In her Oct 23rd blog CFS Warrior reported that VIPdx Labs (formerly RedLabs) based in Reno, NV will start shipping out XMRV test kits on Monday, Oct 26th. Vincent Lombardi, the head of the lab, was the chief author of the XMRV paper published in Science.

There are two possible tests; the PCR is the most important because it tests for an active infection. The virus culture test will determine if the virus is present in your cells. Essentially they attempt culture it or grow it using your cells.

•PCR - $400 •Culture - $500 •PCR/Culture - $650

I understand that the Cooperative Diagnostics is also doing the test but they are doing it wrong. I understand that they are doing straight PCR which misses about 70% of the positives. Do you know anything about this?

I know Cooperative Diagnostics, and they are doing a good job, they run a PCR test, which catches at least as many positives as WPI, maybe more. Cooperative's PCR test uses a proprietary technology that is more sensitive.

WPI does have the viral culture test which Cooperative Diagnostics does not run, but that costs extra.

One more comment, an antibody test would be the best other test to have along with PCR, but that is not available yet from any lab (as of Oct 30, 2009).
